HOW WE CALCULATE TRAVEL EMISSIONS

Flight emissions calculated using United Nations ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) data, which is based on 190+ reporting countries including aircraft types, fuel consumption, passenger/freight ratios and passenger load factors. With this data we calculate emissions of round-trip flights from throughout Canada, Europe and the US to San Jose and Liberia, Costa Rica–and apply a radiative forcing factor of 1.9 Hotel emissions calculated using data published by the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, which aggregates carbon emissions data from more than 25,000 global hotel properties. Rental car emissions calculated using an average daily drive of 150 miles at 20 miles per gallon and fuel burning emissions factors published by the UK DEFRA organization.
