Los Santos Community Wind Power
Costa Rica
While popular for its eco tourism, tropical beaches and world class fishing and surfing, the vast majority of Costa Rica is rural–with communities working in agriculture. Some of these communities still have limited access to the national electricity grid, instead relying heavily on fossil fuels.
Los Santos is a community based project that generates and distributes 20,000 MWh of clean electricity to rural communities, and mitigates 15,000 metric tonnes of CO2e emissions each year–that’s like eliminating emissions from 3,742 cars.
Community & Climate Impact
provides clean, reliable electricity for 50,000+ in rural communities
funds ongoing environmental education and sustains 20 local jobs
improves security through increased night time street illumination
foundational to gender equality–frees up time historically required by women to source cooking fuels and avoid food spoiling due to a lack of refrigeration
decreases community reliance on trees as a fuel source
Why we choose Los Santos
Much more than carbon removal
People least responsible for climate change suffer from it the most. While the average American emits more than 16 metric tonnes CO2e each year, the average Costa Rican emits just 1.6 metric tonnes. Los Santos delivers on the following United Nations sustainability goals:
